8.9 Magnitude Earthquake in Japan
« on: March 11, 2011, 12:30:58 PM »
Dear Lord, the preliminary images from this are devastating.  The initial quake was followed by a 6.9 and 7.1.  A nuclear power plant is at risk.

I heard from Karyn O (ko26) on here.  She said she is safe and her home is not near the area which could be flooded by the tsunami.

Oz did get a warning...but didn't reach here thankfully.

I did think of Karyn when they said Hawaii was at risk, glad to hear she's OK.

Japans has just said they have lost control of the ??cooling in that nuclear plant...not sure what that means as cooling is really important!

Latest update is that all 5 nuclear plants are critical; let's pray they get this under control.

This list of earthquakes / aftershocks is truly graphic.  http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php

I heard a moment ago that another 6.6  earthquake unrelated to the 8.9 has just occurred;  these poor, poor people.

A fact I'd not known about tsunamis, regardless of heighth - 'It's a wave on a wave; it's not only heighth, but the length of the wave that proves so devastating.  The initial wave is followed by a river or surge."  This wave sped out at 500 miles an hour.  It impacted not only Hawaii, but our Pacific Coast, closing down highway 101 and slamming into Crescent City in California.

some guy in California died because him and a couple friends wanted to take pics. they got swept to sea and two of them swam to shore but not the other guy. that is sad. I know we will hear of more people dying and it is horrible. I never thought there would be a tsunami in California but I guess it can be anywhere with an earthquake of that magnitude. The poor people in Japan. that is so davastating. what a disaster this is. I pray for them all

The force of this was so immense it caused a shift in the earth's axis.

CNN "The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)."

Why, oh why do people flock to the beach to view a tsunami??????

I don't understand people sometimes . You can't go to a beach to take pictures of a tsunami. People have tried that before and died. those other two are just lucky they got to shore. People need to do what the warnings say and stay away from the beach when this happens.

No, the Beach is the worst place to be. Man V Mother Nature-only one winner. Reports on our news, say that this Tsunami was travelling at 600 miles an hour. Hope all the world would start to pull together, and help all Mankind in trouble, rather than keeping spending Billions on War. Prayers go out to all in Japan.

Japan is the most prepared country in the world for earthquakes, but no one can escape a 10min warning about a tsunami.

talking about people flocking to the beach with warnings in place.....during cyclone Yasi in Qld, about 6 middle aged people decided to stay in their house together, despite warnings to evacuate, as there would be no help during the cyclone....and guess what, they rang for help!!! >:(

Japan is the most prepared country in the world for earthquakes

So true kas.  So many are protected physically, but it's unimaginable what these people are experiencing emotionally each day with dozens of earthquakes ranging from 4.5 to 6.6, not knowing if loved ones are living or where they are, etc. - not to mention the nuclear threat.

How much can a people endure?

Having said that - it is wonderful to hear of the world's response of aid.  Facebook, twitter and the like have facilitated the world community to communicate - reuniting loved ones, giving hope, offering help; a lovely thing to see. (Or read of - not being fb or twitter literate myself.)

the internet is a wonderful thing I agree. It amazes me the quick response from all over the globe to this horrific disaster and the ongoing explosions in the nuclear plants....now this is real scary as it doesn't sound under control :(
It seems all we are doing is hearing about these global disasters and if you weren't depressed before watching you sure as H*ll after!
