Oh my gosh, I just remembered this – I was once close, personal, friends with JD Souther’s dog. No, really –
It’s been 12 or 13 yrs., but back then JD had a beautiful, sweet Rottweiler with some kind of weird bone ailment that left his joints all floppy. Poor thing walked like a seal and needed extensive surgical intervention and life-long aftercare. JD had the cash, but not the time to do right by him, so he called on an old friend here in Utah.
Cyrus Mejia, one of the founders of Best Friends Animal Society
http://www.bestfriends.org/ is a fabulous artist, also an excellent singer and musician, and he and JD knew each other from somewhere (can’t remember what Cyrus told me). Long story short, Floppy came to live with Cyrus and his wife, Anne, in their home at the sanctuary. He got the best of everything, and while never 100%, he lived a fine life, loved by all who knew him. My husband and I have long been affiliated with Best Friends and got to see and love on Floppy often. His picture even ended up on one of the Best Friends greeting cards, I’ll see if I can’t find one & scan it. Floppy went to the Rainbow Bridge several years ago and is buried at Angel’s Rest, the Best Friends animal cemetery.
So, on top of being a great songwriter, singer and Eagle pal, JD Souther is a first-class animal lover too.
